The event will start with an examination of the contents of a moth trap set nearby. There will then be a PowerPoint presentation on issues relating to moth identification and recording. Also a discussion on locally-important habitats and their conservation, including Catherton Common and its associated species. Delegates would be encouraged to bring their own photographs and specimens for identification. The presentation would include:

· Introduction to moths, including basic biology and ecology, the diversity and importance of moths, moth habitats and the need for conservation

· The Moths Count project and National Moth Recording Scheme

· Moth recording techniques, including light trapping (and cheap alternatives to moth traps), sugaring and wine roping, searching for caterpillars, use of pheromone lures etc.

· Introduction to useful reference books, field guides and equipment

·Health and safety for field work

·Importance of recording for conservation, how to make a record and where to send it

· Fieldwork with light traps and other techniques (as appropriate)

· Practical experience identifying live moths

·Information about local support (i.e. other events, local moth groups) and ongoing training for moth recorders
